Ahmedabad Air Tragedy: Air India Dreamliner Crashes, High-Level Probe Underway

A devastating aviation tragedy unfolded this afternoon when an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, flight AI 171 en route from Ahmedabad to London, crashed shortly after takeoff. The aircraft, carrying 242 passengers, went down near a hostel for doctors affiliated with a local medical college at approximately 1:30 PM.

Air India confirmed that the flight was “involved in an incident” and authorities have now launched a full-scale investigation. Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu stated that a high-level committee has been formed to probe the crash and assured that emergency and aviation teams have been instructed to act swiftly. The minister also confirmed he is closely monitoring developments.

The crash scene was engulfed in thick smoke, with emergency services rushing to the site. Over two dozen ambulances were deployed, and the injured — most of whom were residents of the medical college hostel — have been transported to nearby hospitals. Traffic has been rerouted from the crash zone as rescue operations continue.

Home Minister Amit Shah visited the hospital where the injured are receiving treatment. Speaking after his visit, he revealed the aircraft was carrying over 100,000 litres of fuel, and the intensity of the fire left little chance for survival. However, in a rare glimmer of hope, at least one passenger has been reported to have survived.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Ahmedabad tomorrow to assess the situation, according to government sources.

Preliminary reports indicate that the pilot had sent out a mayday call shortly before communication was lost. The cause of the crash remains unknown, but investigators are expected to begin analyzing flight data and black box recordings as part of the probe.
